ABC Staff Participates in Homes for Our Troops Volunteer Day

Staff members from ABC National and the ABC Virginia chapter spent last Saturday morning with nonprofit, Homes for Our Troops, cleaning up and landscaping with more than 95 volunteers to put the final touches on the brand-new home built for disabled Marine Veteran, LCpl Nick Thom and his wife.

Homes for Our Troops raises money, building materials and professional labor, and coordinates the process of building a home for disabled Veterans that provides maximum freedom and the ability to live more independently. The homes provided by Homes for Our Troops are given at no cost to the Veterans receiving the homes.
“This isn’t about charity. It’s a moral obligation to take care of the Veterans who took care of us,” said Homes for Our Troops President and Director, Major General (USA, Retired) Timothy McHale.

The day was spent clearing the large yard, laying sod and planting trees, completing the landscaping around the home and took about four hours to complete.

Addressing the volunteers, General (USA Retired) Richard Cody, chairman of the Homes for Our Troops board, thanked the people who came out to support the cause.

“What I see on the news isn’t the America I know; you are the America I know,” said Cody. “You don’t have to wear a uniform to serve the country. Right now you are serving your country; you’re a part of Nick’s army.”
