The ABC Construction Management Competition (CMC) is a hallmark competition that promotes careers in construction management. The competition is designed to challenge construction knowledge, organization, time management, and presentation skills. This competition gives the nation’s top construction management students a glimpse into the real world of construction, as well as an opportunity to showcase their talents. In addition to providing a significant learning opportunity, the competition fosters an environment that will bring out the best in each team; encourage dialogue among the students; and foster team spirit as students rise to meet this challenge.

This annual competition is held at ABC Convention at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center from March 26-28, 2019. Registration for the 2019 CMC is open and the deadline to register is Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019

Competition Overview

The ABC Construction Management Competition provides competing teams an opportunity to experience an actual project that exhibits unique characteristics and issues. Participating teams will assemble a general contracting firm that will represent their school and ABC Student Chapter in the competition. Each participating team will receive electronic access to a set of documents in advance of the competition on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019. Competing teams will be limited to four (4) competitors each and one (1) designated alternate.

The 2019 competition will focus on the selection of a general contractor for a project based on price and technical proposal. The selection will be facilitated in three Steps.

Step One – Price and Technical Proposal will consist of pre- competition work that provides the team’s estimated project cost and demonstrates their overall experience and capability in constructing the project.

Step Two – Competition Day will consist of spontaneous exercise led by the Competition Committee.

Step Three – Interviews will consist of face-to-face discussions between the team’s leadership and the
Competition Committee.

Step Three will be limited to “short list” of teams selected by the Competition Committee based on their performance in Step One and Step Two. The Step Three scores will be added to the Step One and Step Two scores to determine the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Overall Awards. Recognition will be also given to the top three (3) teams in each of the categories of Estimating, Project Management, Quality Control and Safety.

Teams must be registered to compete by Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019. The competition RFP will be distributed to all competing teams on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019.

Each team member and alternate must be an active undergraduate member of the chapter and actively enrolled in their college or university at the time of the Construction Management Competition. Only one team per college or university may compete in the competition.

All teams must be a member of the ABC National Student Chapter Network and in good standing.  If you are not a member of the student chapter network and would like to join, please contact Haley Moyers at or at (202) 595-1974.

General Rules

Under no circumstances are teams to contact directly or indirectly the project owner, general contractor, designers, subcontractors, suppliers or any other entity referenced in the project documents or in any way affiliated with the actual project.  Teams found in violation of this requirement will be subject to disqualification.
