The Director of Education and Safety is responsible for the operation of all aspects of the association’s education and safety program, which include, but are not limited to, the operation of the Middle Tennessee trades academy, management education programs, safety programs, as well as the development of additional education programs for the association’s membership.

Position serves under the President/CEO of the association and has one direct report.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone with a background in any level of education, with managerial experience, very organized and motivated.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Manage 18-24 construction apprenticeship instructors.
  • Manage the Asst. Director of Education in the management, growth, and direction of the East Tennessee apprenticeship program.
  • Oversee the efficient and effective operation of a Department of Labor curriculum approved apprenticeship education program developed by the National Center of Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and Mike Holt Electrical Curriculum
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, and the requirements of the NCCER, federal U.S. Veterans Administration, Mike Holt Electrical program and any other regulatory agencies that may arise.
  • Develop and implement a recruitment application program, including placement of visits to high schools, communication with high schools, advertising, and member site visits to secure qualified individuals without regard to race, creed, color, national origin, sex, or religion, to apply for the program.
  • Recruit knowledgeable instructors in the various trades to conduct the education program, and to have a pool of substitute instructors.
  • Conduct regular class evaluations.
  • Maintain all records, as required by the U.S. Department of Labor, State Apprenticeship Council, U.S. Veterans Administration, and NCCER
  • Order all books for the classes and instructors.
  • Responsible for the annual planning and coordination of the apprenticeship graduation in late Spring/early Summer
  • Work with the President/CEO to coordinate the invoicing and receipts associated with the apprenticeship program.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of the annual education budgets.
  • Seek opportunities to work with other organizations to encourage them to participate in the chapter’s apprenticeship education program.
  • Establish relationships with other apprenticeship education providers and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Apprenticeship Training to increase knowledge and awareness of construction education programs, regulations, and procedures.
  • Serve on various trade related boards regarding workforce development.
  • Serve as a counselor and career advisor for students in the program.
  • Work to ensure employment for students who enter the program.
  • Conduct visits with individual school district counselors to discuss construction career opportunities
  • Secure opportunities to meet with high school counselors about the construction industry and the skill requirements, salary levels, and advancement opportunities
  • Participate in area high school career days and various career trade shows.
  • Stay current on construction educational opportunities and member needs by providing construction industry related education courses for members.
  • Offer Project Management/Supervisor training programs.
  • Offer affordable construction related and/or other education programs needed by the membership, such as, but not limited to OSHA 10 Hour classes.
  • Seek input from other ABC Education Directors and volunteers on how to provide construction education programs more effectively, as well as additional construction education opportunities.
  • Properly staff the Workforce Development/Safety Training Committee which includes preparation of meeting notices, meeting arrangements, meeting agendas, and meeting minutes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chapter President/CEO, including, but not limited to assistance in other chapter events when needed, as well as volunteer leadership, completing tasks in a timely and professional manner.

Qualifications and Experience

  • 2-4 years in any level of Education
  • Demonstrated writing, copywriting, and proofreading skills.
  • Managerial experience with at least one direct report
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to multitask, be very organized, and prioritize on tight deadlines.
  • Tech savvy; experience with email marketing systems and social media tools

Specialized Skills

  • Customer service experience.
  • Motivated self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Experience Required

  • 1-2 years of experience.

Work Environment

  • This position is performed in a typical office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
