MEET THE PRESENTERS

Mike Bennett is vice president at Cianbro, a 100% employee-owned, self-performing general contractor that provides diverse construction services in 41 states. An AQC and STEP Diamond participant, Bennett and the Cianbro team strive every day to send their team members home in better condition than when they arrive on the jobsite. He previously served as chair of ABC’s National Workforce Development Committee and currently chairs ABC’s National Safety Committee. He has been a member of the ABC Maine Chapter’s Board of Directors since 2000 and was chairman in 2008 and 2018.  He is also the chair of the Board of Trustees for NCCER.

Cal Beyer serves as the vice president of workforce risk and worker wellbeing at CSDZ, a Holmes Murphy company. He has more than 30 years of experience in construction safety, health, wellness, insurance and risk management and was instrumental in the launch of the construction industry suicide prevention movement in 2014 and formation of Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention. Beyer was an inaugural member of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention and served as co-chair of the Workplace Task Force from 2015–2017 and on the Executive Committee since 2016.  He was also named a Top 25 Newsmaker for 2016 by Engineering News-Record for his work on suicide prevention.

Paul Surgenor PhD, is a psychologist with 15 years of expertise in behavioral health research and program development. He has been a professor at leading universities in Ireland, including Technological University of Dublin, Dublin City University, University of Limerick and University College Dublin, and has published multiple reports and peer-reviewed papers in education, behavioral health and suicide prevention. Dr. Surgenor has established behavioral health education and training programs for public and private sector clients in Ireland and the United States, as well as developed online and face-to-face, evidence-based programs that integrate international best practices with needs analysis from specific communities. He has enabled teams to integrate behavioral changes into strategic and actions plans to ensure effective and long-term impact.
