ABC issues news releases on the latest workforce, policy and industry issues, as well as construction-related economic data and trends. Commercial and industrial construction economic analyses include federal data on construction spending, employment, GDP and the Producer Price Index, as well as state-by-state construction unemployment estimates.

In addition, ABC produces the Construction Backlog Indicator, the only economic indicator that reflects the amount of work that will be performed by commercial and industrial construction contractors in the months ahead, and the Construction Confidence Index, a diffusion index that signals construction contractors’ expectations for sales, profit margins and staffing levels. ABC construction economic releases are published according to this schedule

West Virginia Becomes 22nd State to Prohibit PLA Mandates

Charleston, W.VA- Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) and ABC of West Virginia (ABCWV) today applauded Gov. Tomblin (D-W.V.) for signing the Establishing Fair and Open Competition in Governmental Construction Act (SB 409). The bill prohibits government entities from requiring contractors to enter into wasteful and discriminatory project labor agreements (PLAs) as a condition of performing work on publicly funded construction projects. ABC Applauds Law that Ensures Open Competition on Public Construction Projects

Little Rock, Ark.– Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) and ABC of Arkansas (ABCAR) today applauded Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R-Ark.) for signing the Fair and Open Competition in Governmental Construction Act (S.B. 426). The bill codifies and strengthens a 2005 executive order issued by Gov. ABC Applauds Passage of Senate Bill to Overturn NLRB’s Ambush Election Rule

Washington, D.C. – Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) released the following statement on the U.S. Senate’s passage of a joint resolution to block the National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) ambush election proposal. The resolution, introduced by Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and House Committee on Education and the Workforce Chairman John Kline (R-Minn.), seeks to prevent the NLRB from implementing the ambush rule, which is scheduled to take effect April 14, through the Congressional Review Act.

ABC Files Suit Against NLRB’s Ambush Election Rule

Austin, Texas- Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Texas and the Central Texas Chapter of ABC announced today they have filed a joint lawsuit with the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Texas challenging the National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) ambush election final rule issued Dec. 12, 2014. The legal challenge was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. The Texas office of Littler Mendelson, P.C., ABC’s general counsel, will represent ABC of Texas, the Central Texas Chapter of ABC and NFIB Texas in the case. Read the rest of entry »

Construction Industry Reminded of High Effective Rate on Tax Day

As the construction industry rebounds amid tepid economic growth, many Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) members are greeted with a significant tax increase this week. The contractors who emerged from the recession already paid thehighest effective tax rate of any sector, and now they face even higher taxes thanks to rising marginal rates, reinstated limits on deductions, and new surtaxes on wages and income stemming from the health care law.

ABC Celebrates U.S. District Court’s Ruling Against Davis-Bacon Expansion

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today celebrated an important decision limiting the scope of the Davis-Bacon Act issued by a U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.  In a March 31 decision granting summary judgment to the District of Columbia (the District) and private developer CCDC Office LLC (CCDC), Judge Amy Berman Jackson rejected the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) ruling that the Davis-Bacon Act can be expanded to include privately funded projects.
