ABC members and representatives converged in Washington, D.C., Dec. 5-7, for the 2012 ABC Attorneys Conference. Attendees heard from Obama administration and agency officials, NLRB Chairman Mark Pearce, ABC national staff and labor law experts on the latest developments and insights impacting the merit shop construction industry.
ABC will be hosting a STEP Plus Safety Excellence Academy “Train-the-Trainer” Course, Jan. 9-11 in the National office in Arlington, Va. Owners of ABC member companies, safety professionals and chapter safety staff are encouraged to apply to become one of a select number of Authorized STEP Plus Safety Academy trainers that conduct the Safety Academy nationwide.
The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) are requesting comments from the construction industry about the potential use of government-mandated project labor agreements (PLAs) on two large-scale federal projects in Maryland and California.
In a 2013 construction forecast released Dec. 4, ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu predicted nonresidential construction spending to expand 5.2 percent next year, with much of the expansion coming from privately financed projects.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Treasury Department issued proposals that will implement two taxes in the health care law on Jan. 1, 2013: the onerous 3.8 percent Net Investment Income Tax and the 0.9 percent Additional Medicare Tax. These taxes will heavily impact many merit shop contractors.
