On Oct. 27, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan attended the grand opening of ABC Greater Baltimore Chapter’s new Construction Education Academy, located at a Project C.O.R.E site in East Baltimore. This new state-of-the-art facility will house the largest concentration of building trade apprenticeship programs in the state, enabling ABC Greater Baltimore to train up to 5,000 skilled workers each year, doubling their current capacity.

“Since its founding in Baltimore in 1950, ABC has been setting the standard for safety, quality and integrity in the construction industry,” said Governor Hogan. “Just as importantly, as we see here today, ABC continues to invest in the future of our skilled workforce. As our state and nation continue our economic recovery, we will continue to rely on ABC to help us grow a steady pipeline of talented, well-trained workers to meet the increasing demand for these skilled jobs.”

ABC Greater Baltimore, which has been a registered apprenticeship sponsor for more than 52 years, offers apprenticeship programs in more than 20 occupations and currently has more than 500 registered apprentices.

Registered apprenticeships are part of ABC’s commitment to an all-of-the-above approach for developing a workforce that meets the current and future needs of the construction industry. In September, ABC was awarded the Pledge to America’s Workers Presidential Award for its achievements in workforce education and fulfilling its 2018 pledge to recruit and upskill at least 500,000 workers by 2023. In 2019 alone, ABC members invested $1.5 billion to educate and upskill more than 1.1 million course attendees in craft, leadership and safety education to advance their careers in commercial and industrial construction.
