As a part of the Affordable Coverage Project, ABC and other business groups responded to final rules issued by the IRS on the new burdensome health insurance tax beginning on Jan. 1, 2014, calling on Congress to protect employers and consumers from the increased health coverage costs. In an effort to delay the new health insurance tax for two years, members of the Affordable Coverage Project previously sent a letter to the U.S. House of Representatives urging Congress to support H.R. 3367, the Small Business and Family Relief Act. The group has also urged support for H.R. 763, bipartisan legislation to fully repeal the tax that now has 229 co-sponsors. The new $100 million health insurance tax requires health insurance companies to pay a new tax on the benefits they provide to individuals, families, small and mid-size employers, beneficiaries in Medicare Advantage and state Medicaid managed care programs, and is expected to raise the cost of small group family coverage by $360 in 2014 and $6,830 over the next decade.
