Workforce Development
ABC member company S & B Engineers and Constructors Ltd. celebrated the grand opening this week of their new Craft Education and Skills Enhancement Center, a 12,500-square-foot education facility that includes three classrooms and five bays for hands-on craft education activities. Located in Baytown, Texas, the facility provides skill enhancement opportunities for S & B’s construction workforce across multiple disciplines, including welding, pipefitting, electrical, millwright, civil and rigging, carpentry, crane operating, ironworking, scaffolding and safety. The new facility will serve as the central hub of S & B’s wider workforce development program, which includes on-the-job-education activities at construction sites, as well as S & B’s Women in Construction Apprenticeship program, which focuses on lifting single-head-of-household families out of poverty. The opening of S & B’s education facility garnered national attention. First Daughter Ivanka Trump made a surprise visit to the Craft Education and Skills Enhancement Center last week, meeting with the current Women in Construction Apprenticeship class. Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), chairwoman of the House Education and Workforce Committee, Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Congressman Kevin Brady (R-Texas), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and Congressman Brian Babin (R-Texas) also attended the opening on Monday. The new facility will play an important role in staffing S & B’s significant construction backlog in the U.S. Gulf Coast region with safe, efficient and highly-qualified craft professionals.
