On Nov. 6, Barack Obama was re-elected as president of the United States, defeating Republican nominee Gov. Mitt Romney with more than 300 electoral votes and a popular vote of 50 percent to 48 percent.

In Congress, the U.S. Senate now stands at 55 Democrats to 45 Republicans and the U.S. House of Representatives will have a Republican majority with an approximate 35 seat advantage over Democrats. Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) is likely to remain Speaker of the House and Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is expected to remain Senate Majority Leader. In addition, Markwayne Mullin, owner of Mullin Plumbing, Inc., Broken Arrow, Okla., and a member of the ABC Oklahoma Chapter, won a seat in the House to represent Oklahoma’s 2nd District.

Following the election, ABC reasserted its commitment to advocating for the issues that are important to the merit shop construction industry. In the next two years, ABC will play a significant role in presumptive debates in Congress regarding comprehensive tax and entitlement reform, in addition to comprehensive immigration reform.
