OSHA announced on June 25 that it will be conducting a new National Emphasis Program on occupational exposure to isocyanates, which are used in materials including paints, varnishes, auto body repair, and building insulation. Through this National Emphasis Program, OSHA will focus on workplaces in general, construction and maritime industries that use isocyanate compounds. Under the directive, isocyanate inspections will include a review of the employer's recordkeeping, safety data sheets and chemical inventory list; exposure assessments; air sampling; and wipe sampling of surfaces, personal protection equipment and skin. OSHA develops national emphasis programs to focus outreach efforts and inspections on specific hazards in an industry for a three-year period. OSHA's web page on isocyanates provides additional information.
